Air source heat pump technology explained
An air source heat pump is an environmentally friendly heat extraction unit that resembles an air conditioning unit located next to but outside your property. An air source heat pump runs solely on electricity not like more traditional gas or oil based systems and is designed to extract heat from the air outside your home even at temperatures below -15C. The unit then transfers that warmth to inside your home, providing heating and hot water.

The technology used within an air source pump is very similar to that of a fridge using compressors and heat exchangers but effectively in reverse. Even in colder weather , the air around your home contains latent heat and the air source heat pump is designed to catch that air from outside in order to heat a special refrigerant liquid. Once that liquid reaches a certain temperature, it transforms into a gas which can then be compressed. This cold gas is then transformed into a hot liquid and passed into a heat exchanger that heats water, sending it to both your radiator or underfloor heating system and your hot water taps. This cycle is repeated as once the gas has transferred its heat and reverts back to a liquid.
This whole process works at considerably lower temperatures than a gas or oil-fired boiler, generating a lower heat over longer time spans thus being more thermally efficient and reducing CO2 emissions. The whole process can heat your home more cost effectively with an energy efficiency of over 350% – compared to a gas boiler, which is about 90% efficient.
