What is a Ground Source Heat Pump?

Ground source heat pumps extract thermal energy from the ground around your property and converts this into heating & Hot water for your home. Ground source heat pumps take heat from at least 1m below ground where there is a stable 10 degree temperature throughout the year. Pipe is laid in the ground in close proximity to your home (such as in the garden). The  fluid within the pipes absorbs heat from the ground then passes through a compressor in the heat pump, which condenses  the heat and is then used in the home for heating and hot water.

The process of ground source heating uses electricity to run the pump, however, the amount of energy collected from the ground to heat your home is significantly more than the amount of electricity required to power the system.

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An air source heat pump provides heating for your home by collecting warmth from the outside air and then using this energy once compressed to increase the temperature which is then fed into the heating system of the home to provide warmth and to heat water. This a very cost effective way of heating your property as the electricity used in this process is far less than the electricity that would be needed to produce the energy to heat your home using more traditional heating systems.

What are the benefits of installing Air or Ground  Source Pumps?

There are a number of benefits from installing either air or ground source heat pumps and can vary in degree depending on your exiting heating system. Both systems have the potential to:

  • Four times as much energy
  • Wide range of temperatures
  • Usually located outside
  • Retrofitted in existing buildings
  • Microgeneration Certification Scheme
  • Provides cool air in the summer
  • Compact design outside
  • Minimal maintenance (fit and forget)
  • Heats your home and provides hot water
  • Generate income through RHI
